Description
The Battery in Charleston is a fortified seawall and promenade that stands as one of downtown Charleston's most frequented destinations. This impressive wall stretches along the shore of the Charleston peninsula, bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, which converge to form the Charleston Harbor. The Battery's rich history dates back to 1737 when Broughton's Battery, later known as Fort Wilkins, was constructed on this site. During the 1750s, a seawall was erected using large boulders, stone, and masonry. Broughton's Battery was eventually decommissioned and demolished in 1789. However, when a new wall and promenade were completed in the 1820s, locals continued to refer to it as "The Battery."
Today, The Battery is surrounded by historic antebellum mansions and offers breathtaking views of Fort Sumter, Castle Pinckney, the USS Yorktown, Fort Moultrie, and Sullivans Island lighthouse. It is a popular destination for both tourists and joggers alike. While visiting The Battery, many tourists also take the opportunity to explore White Point Garden, which is located directly across the street.
The Battery's rich history and stunning views make it a must-see destination for anyone visiting Charleston. Whether you're a history buff or simply looking for a picturesque spot to take a stroll, The Battery is sure to impress.
